'Keeping up appearances' is not a new social phenomenon. The Talmud details extravagant funeral practices which embarrassed those who couldn't afford them. Rabban Gamliel, President of the Sanhedrin, took up the cause of the poor and led by example. We will study the Talmud passage (available in original or translation) which forms the basis for traditional Jewish funeral customs.
